The History of the 'Blogosphere'

Who was the first 'blogger'?

The problem when trying to identify the pioneer of any new media, is defining when that media first came came into existance. Blogging is a key example of this problem:

'Was the first blogger the irascible Dave Winer? The iconoclastic Jorn Barger? Or was the first blogger really Justin Hall, a Web diarist and online gaming expert whom The New York Times Magazine once called the "founding father of personal blogging"? '

Good angle for a post - you're right - with new media, especially with things that develop online over time like blogging, so many people's ideas contributed to what we now think of as a weblog/blogging, that's it's hard to single out one person. It would be good to develop this into a proper angle. Try to link to sources when you quote from them.
